EMA Broxbourne is the principal voluntary organisation in the Borough of Broxbourne in Hertfordshire for meeting the needs of the district’s minority ethnic communities and many of their individual members and groups. Formed in 1996 against a background of increasing numbers of people from minority ethnic groups moving into the area joining already settled, albeit relatively small, communities of minority ethnic residents, and the growing recognition that formal services that were not equipped to meet their needs or respond to their requests for support. The founders realised that access to meeting spaces and services was the key variable and from the beginning, EMA’s work has focussed on this.
Working to its aims around the key areas of promoting mutual understanding, encouraging different communities to come together, promoting and raising awareness of EMA to different organisations and services. EMA Broxbourne strives continually to be firmly established both as the representative ‘voice’ of BME communities in Broxbourne, and as a significant broker, advisor and consultant for the larger community and its service agencies that need and wish to enable greater participation by ethnic minority groups and services.
EMA Broxbourne has achieved, but is facing demands to deliver much more. Our future plans are tailored to respond to these demands. In doing so, it has made an in-depth study of its aspirations, its achievements, its resources and its prospects. Key results show a need for paid coordination and administration to move forward, increasing the group's responsibilities, and accountability to establish more local groups that it can be represent. This will generate a healthier environment and a credible point of contact and reference, not only for EMA Broxbourne members, but for the larger community of Broxbourne through developed partnership working.
To achieve these objectives and to realise its aims, EMA Broxbourne in turn welcomes the support and involment of the larger community, as well as resource providers and other stakeholders to work in partnership in supporting and enabling EMA Broxbourne.
